Description : Wild orfe, or ide are rarely found in the UK, but the cultivated golden orfe is common in stillwater fisheries. Often found in shoals near weedbeds, feeding on plant material and invertebrates. Instantly recognisable by its distinctive orange coloured body and red fins. Ofre will move into shallow weedbeds during breeding from April to May.
Angling information : The current UK record is 7 lb 14 oz 8 drm, and anything over around 4 lb is considered to be a specimen. Golden orfe are wary fish, often coming up in the water and taking the bait on the drop and will shy away from anything suspicious. For this reason a good bait presentation is essential to temp the better fish. Thus the favoured method is float fishing with a waggler or pole fishing. Fine tackle can be used as they are not particularly hard fighing. Hooks as small as size 22 are often used. The best baits include : maggot, castor and bread.
Tip : Look for the fish if they are up in the water, it is easy to see the bright orange colouring of the fish as they patrol an area looking for food. Cast to the fish allowing the bait to fall naturally through the water past the target fish.
